Machismo | Periodical
To know about the visual identity of a place, it is recommended to take a walk and look at the elements that surround it. The Dominican urban landscape is filled with handpainted signs and illustrations that narrate the identity of its popular culture. I started decomposing found signs from all over the island. Asking myself if by removing its color and context, would it still look "Dominican"? This periodical later became a critique and exposure of sexism in the Dominican Republic and how, just as these letters, it has become part of our popular culture. Through 3 issues, this periodical explores "machismo" practices in Dominican music, television, and news.
